Nikolaj Efendi is a Carinthian-Slovene composer, singer, and author based in Vienna. Moving between stage and studio, he creates music at the intersection of theatre, electroacoustic composition, and sound-based storytelling – with a penchant for urgency, dissonance, and sonic landscapes.

After releasing seven albums with his bands Roy de Roy and under his own name – and performing more than 300 concerts across 14 European countries, from autonomous squats to international festivals such as Jazzfest Saalfelden, Paaspop, Lowlands, or Druga Godba – his artistic focus has in recent years shifted toward theatre and electroacoustic composition. He has collaborated with various directors, including Mateja Koležnik, Mira Stadler, Itay Tiran, Stephan Müller and Christina Gegenbauer. His music has been presented at the Burgtheater and Akademietheater in Vienna, Theater an der Josefstadt, and the State Theatres of Stuttgart, Trier, Bielefeld, Maribor, as well as in numerous independent and festival productions across Austria, Slovenia, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

Efendi also works at the intersection of literature and sound art. His theatre pieces „Die Stadt, die uns das Feuer nahm“, (2017) and „Im Keller unter uns“(2019) explore urban fiction and poetic realism, digging through underground spaces and inner ruins.

He is currently developing two projects in the field of contemporary sound art: Wenn Dinge warm werden, an acoustic climate sculpture exploring sound as a state of transformation, and Resonant Trust, an electroacoustic cycle on voice, intimacy, and trust. Both works are conceived as ongoing artistic research into listening, resonance, and shared presence.
